Banff Film Festival review
Finding Farley:
When filmmakers Karsten Heuer and Leanne Allison, along with their two-year-old son Zev and indomitable dog Willow, set out to retrace the literary footsteps of Farley Mowat, they meant it literally. Their 5000-kilometre trip — trekking, sailing, portaging, and paddling from the Prairies to the Maritimes — is captured in this film. The family’s arrival at their final destination (Mowat’s Nova Scotian summer home) is, as Heuer says, “an affirmation of what the land and animals had already told us.”

Personal feelings: amazing, brave, and happy people. I would love to be able to do a shorter version someday. I would love to be able to let my kids experience something similar to that at an age they can remember. LESS BUGS would be nice.

Deep/Shinsetsu, from Japan: “Shinsetsu” means deep powder in Japanese. This short film expresses a typical day in the mountains in Japan.
Personal feelings: I am no professional skier although if I were rich I would be more of an avid skier. This movie was relaxing and tranquil and the deepest powder i have ever seen. TO be honest I thought the title of the movie "deep shinsetsu was slang for ''deep shit" i am not so well cultured I know.
Star sport climber Chris Sharma takes on his greatest challenge yet: The unclimbed, 90-metre limestone cave on Mount Clark, Nevada. Sharma dangles from one finger, jumps between tiny handholds, and takes 30-metre free falls as he endeavours to make the first ascent of what will be the most difficult rock climb in the world. After months of attempts on the route, Sharma returns to his adopted home of northern Spain in order to train for his ultimate battle with Mount Clark.
Personal feelings: very rewarding film to see him master the mountain he was training for and the mountain that was so close to his hometown. Personally i loved watching his girlfriend climb and how sweet she was. She wanted to see him fulfill his dreams and goals as much as he did.

MedeoZ, from France: Filmed in the Mont Blanc range, this short features six different mountain sports: climbing, skiing, snowboarding, speed riding, paragliding and BASE jumping. A photographer wants to take one shot showing all the sports instead of separate photos of each sport.
Personal feelings: it was exciting and impressive.. They all six got up the mountain in different forms and at the same time all jumped for one awesome photo opportunity. Stunning and spiritual photo when he finally pulled it off.

Azazel lures you to a 19-day vertical big-wall trip with Martial, Blutch, Mimouse and Sam who don’t take them too seriously. They have to haul up 300 kilograms of equipment along with sausages and beer to keep them going at 6,000 meters of altitude. Their scope is to open a new 1,600 meter-long aid route on the mythical Towers of Trango in Pakistan. On day 16, Sam flies away on his wing suit and his parachute, and 2 minutes later arrives to the base camp. What was left to be taken down by his 3 friends? Just 10 haul bags, nothing more. These four friends are very comical. they endure days and days of pleasure, quantities of testosterone expended, frozen fingers and naps on the wall. (ledge)
Person feelings: Maybe these men have a death wish or maybe they are the true meaning of living life to the fullest. Either way it was entertaining to watch and their strength and confidence was something to be desired.

The Ultimate Skiing Showdown, from Canada: The final sprint showdown between the fastest skiers on earth in juxtaposition with a stunt performer showing some of the sickest moves on Nordic skis.
Personal feelings: It was a nice laugh for the evening. People have such strong legs. I wish i did! This was set to the tune of a hilarious song even with some Chuck Norris jokes for my Chuck fan husband and friends. It made me happy!
